We do have a few deciduous trees here including cottonwood, aspen, and Japanese maple to give us some color. And, yes, we do get rainy days like the one we’re having today.

Thus ends the squares experiment for this past month. Hope you’ve enjoyed looking at photos a little differently. For me, it’s a bit of a throwback. I know people are seeing more and more photos framed in squares rather than rectangles nowadays due to services like Instagram, but I thought I’d have a little fun with the concept and see if I could see the world a little differently.

I’m toying with the idea of launching a new month long project in January. It involves trying to get decent results out of a rather disappointing camera purchase I made last year, an Olympus FE-47. Maybe the camera and I just didn’t have time to figure each other out. Or, maybe, it’s just a crappy camera. I don’t know, but if this project goes ahead, we’ll all have more insights about that at the end of next month.

Next to the last day for this project, and today’s photo subject just posed so nicely for me I couldn’t resist.

Meet “Smudge”. At least that’s our name for this cat hanging out on a neighbor’s roof. He was resting comfortably taking in heat from the morning sun and, for once, lay still long enough for me to capture his image.

Using my back up camera that’s with me just about everywhere I go, I got as close as I could to snap this with a clear, blue sky in the background. Unfortunately, there were also power lines in the photo so I had to take those out.

Conversion to black and white, a little noise clean up, add some sepia toning and it almost looks like I had a cooperative cat in the studio rather than getting a candid shot on a neighbor’s roof.

The stables are at the rear of the castle apparently. Here, Rudolph pokes his head out to say “hi” to passersby and pose for photos.
