One of the first things people comment about when they land in Phoenix is how like a serene paradise it looks, mostly because of all the palm trees all over the place.
After all, there are huge swaying palm trees in all those movies about far off, exotic desert lands. This must be paradise.
Except the vast majority the palm trees, especially the tall ones like the one you see here, aren’t native to Arizona. Most of them aren’t even native to this hemisphere.
They’re invaders. Bug infested, pigeon harboring, non-shade producing, high maintenance invaders.
But they sure make for pretty pictures.
