Copper Chicken

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010

This is a copper decoration that hangs behind our stove. It may come as a surprise to some folks that know me that I would allow a chicken in the house. You see, chickens are everywhere. I started noticing them in antiques stores many years ago. You know those glass chicken candy dishes or whatever they are. Every store has a flock of the blasted things and most stores have many more chickens of many more varieties.

They’re not just in antiques stores, either. Next time you’re out and about, look around. I’ll bet it won’t be long before you find a chicken somewhere staring at you, mocking you. That’s what they do. They’re kinda evil in that way.

That being said, about a year ago PJ and I found a stray chicken living at the corner of a busy intersection in south Phoenix. After she’d been there a few days, we decided to capture her and bring her home so we could then find a permanent home for her.

Sheila, as we called the hen, made her home in our side yard for a few weeks while we located a ranch that would take her in. We found New Dawn Livestock Rescue & Sanctuary in Tonopah, west of Phoenix. The folks there rescue abused and abandoned livestock including horses, pigs and, of course, chickens.

It may be time to mount up for a visit to see how our wayward bird is doing. Some chickens, as I found out, aren’t evil.
